John Newton by Richard Cecil

The life of a sailor, who was flogged for desertion, he was a slave in West Africa before becoming a slave trader, he was an atheist who was converted in a great storm at sea who became under God's grace, a true minister of the Gospel and an ally of William Wilberforce in the abolition of the slave trade. He is the author of the well known hymn 'Amazing Grace' and many other well known hymns.
