Review: Sennacherib: Encountering Assyria’s Great and Terrifying Ruler

Sennacherib

Our price: £5, by Clive Anderson (Day One)

A book which traces the rise and fall of Assyria’s most terrifying king, Sennacherib. Using his knowledge of archaeology and the Scriptures, the author weaves a colourful picture of this ancient ruler.

We see how Sennacherib rose to power, how he advanced his empire and came against Jerusalem. We see his arrogance and cruelty and yet his failure to fulfil all he said he would do and his eventual return to his capital and his death. We see what became of his empire and history’s verdict on Sennacherib.

Many lessons are brought out along the way, which are of great benefit. We are caused to all the more rejoice in the God whose kingdom “shall never be destroyed…and shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.”

Review: Help! I Can’t Submit to My Husband

Submit to my husband

Our price: £2.50, by Glenda Hotton (Day One)

This very helpful booklet, which can be read in under an hour, is written by someone who, with God’s help, has had to conquer the very issue she addresses.

The idea of a woman submitting to her husband is something increasingly alien to modern thinking and society. Often Christian women can succumb to the world’s view.

The writer shows from the word of God, how God intends a woman to submit to her husband so as to make her and her husband a partnership which glorifies God and knows true happiness and fulfilment.

She gives many practical examples of where wrong thinking can lead to outcomes which do not honour God or help either husband or wife. She also gives examples of where Biblical behaviour has produced the fruit of great unity and joy in a marriage.

The book ends with a testimony from a woman who having been converted was shocked to see that the Bible expected her to be submissive to her husband. After observing other Christian women and heeding the Scriptures, she found the grace to submit to the Lord’s will and know true liberation and joy.

Review: How Should We Develop Biblical Friendship

Book on Biblical Friendship

Our price: £1.70, by Joel Beeke & Michael Haykin, RHB

This book deals with what can be an often neglected and also delicate subject.

The writers show how true Biblical friendship is something seen in the Scriptures and can be an invaluable help to believers as they seek to encourage one another to live to the glory of God.

The friendships that many have enjoyed throughout church history are also highlighted.

Advice is then given on how to build and cultivate Godly friendships, without turning friendships and friends into idols.

Helpful practical steps are then outlined, such as: how to converse, how to listen, how to serve together, be together and pray together. All this is to be practiced while looking to the greatest friend – Jesus Christ.

This book on Biblical Friendship answers a great need in the church today. Churches can be sound in doctrine and yet places where few have friends.

The intense pressure of modern life and the increasing dependence on social media means that many fail to form true Godly, edifying and lasting friendships. This book on Biblical Friendship is a wonderful remedy to that and a great help.

Review: The Communicant’s Spiritual Companion

Book on Lord’s SupperOur price: £5.30, by Thomas Haweis, RHB

Some Christians struggle to understand the role and place of the Lord’s Supper in their lives.

Who can come to the Lord’s Table? What is the exact nature of this ordinance? How should we prepare ourselves to come to the Lord’s Table? What can we think upon as we take the elements and then after we have taken them? These and many other questions are answered helpfully and clearly.

Various models for prayer are given, to encourage spiritual thoughts and meditations whilst taking the Lord’s Supper.

This book is a great help in encouraging the believer to view the Lord’s Supper in a Biblical way and also to then benefit from it as it plays a vital role in our growth in grace and appreciation of God’s mercy as it is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Review: Mercy Revealed – A Cross-Centred Look at Christ’s Miracles

Mercy Revealed A Cross-Centre Look at Christ’s Miracles

Our price: £6.75, by Gerald Bilkes, RHB

The writer focuses on 22 of the Lord’s miracles so as to emphasise what they tell us about the magnificent Christ who performed them.

These studies are heart warming and practical and give a wonderful survey of the miracles performed by Christ.

Study questions help underline the purpose and teaching of each parable. The exposition brings out and applies certain details in the miracles, which are often over-looked, yet provide us with valid application and encouragement.

In the treatment of the miracle of the coin in the fish’s mouth, we realise that the tax Christ paid was really to do with a redemption price. This gives us new understanding and insight as we realise how Peter was unable to pay, but Christ had the power to provide for the payment.

This is a book which will benefit preachers as they seek further light on the miracles. A great help for all.

Review: God’s Needle

How Lily Gaynor Brought Hope And Healing To The Land Of The Witchdoctors

needle

Our price: £8.99, by Lily Gaynor & John Butterworth

This book is an excellent account of the life and conversion of a young lady and how she sees that the Lord is leading her to serve Him as a nurse and missionary in Guinea-Bissau.

Throughout the book she feels her own inadequacy for everything she has to do – from language learning and looking after animals, to learning general medicine, dentistry and midwifery. But she learns to ask the Lord for His help and He always provides it.

She also learns to trust the Lord for all her material needs. The Lord blesses all the work with many conversions and with many improvements on the medical front. Finally, when she retires, there is now a modern hospital where she started with a mud hut.

This is a book that glorifies the Lord showing His guidance and provision for His servants as they carry out His will.
