Review: Sweetly Set On God: The Piety of David Brainerd

David Brainerdby Dustin W. Benge, Reformed Heritage Books, Our Price: £6.20

This booklet gives a brief biographical outline and then a series of choice selections from the journals of David Brainerd. Brainerd is remembered most for his missionary work, but when writing his work on the man, Jonathan Edwards focused less on his work amongst American Indians and more his spirituality. This is the focus of this book.

Edward’s considered Brainerd a great spiritual model for his readers. He said that he was a man, “who had indeed sold all for Christ and had entirely devoted himself to God, and made his glory his highest end.”

One cannot fail to be moved and challenged by this book which has such words as these: “Thursday, April 15. My desires apparently centred in God, and I found a sensible attraction of soul after Him sundry times today. I know I long for God and conformity to His will in inward purity and holiness, ten thousand times more than anything here below.”

Review: The Next to Last Word: Service, Hope and Revival in the Postexilic Prophets

Postexilic Prophets by Michael P.V. Barrett, Reformed Heritage Books, Our Price: £7.40

Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi – the often ignore Minor prophets – delivered the next-to-last-word to God’s people. That is, these prophets pointed Israel to Christ, the supreme and final Word, and warned them against rejecting Him.

Underscoring the truth that studying this portion of Scripture s profitable, the writer helps us see the relevance of these prophets for today.

He explains the prophetic office, the historical setting of these books and their contribution to God’s overall redemptive message before looking at the specific message of each book.

A great help to preachers and with good applications made.

Review: God’s Way for Romance: Getting Back to Biblical Courtship

God’s Way for Romance - Getting Back to Biblical Courtshipby Stuart Burgess, Day One, Our Price: £6.00

Sexual purity is one of the most important issues facing the church today. There is great peer pressure to have sexual relationships before marriage, and that peer pressure has entered the church.

Having seen first-hand the harmful effects of the relationship culture in universities and churches, Stuart Burgess sets out the biblical reasons why it is right for people to save themselves for marriage, and gives guidance on how this can be done.

He also explains the blessings that result from keeping purity before marriage.  (From the cover.)

The way in which society has descended into its acceptance of promiscuity and sex outside of marriage is shown to go hand in hand with the greater influence of the media.

There is invaluable helpful counsel from the word of God which will help those who wish to “swim” against this tide and so honour God and know His great blessing on their marriages.

Review: The Gospel’s Power and Message: Recovering the Gospel

The Gospel’s Power and Message - Recovering the Gospelby Paul Washer, Reformed Heritage Books, Our Price: 12.35

One of the greatest crimes of this generation of Christians is its neglect of the gospel, and it is from this neglect that all our other maladies spring forth.

Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes which make up the very core of the gospel—the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, the blood atonement.

The author addresses these essential elements of Christ’s good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. (From the cover.)

A great encouragement to preachers to declare the whole counsel of God and a helpful corrective to those who seek to water down those essential elements of the gospel.

Review: Conflict and Triumph: the Argument of the Book of Job Unfolded

book of job

Our price: £6, by William Henry Green (Banner of Truth)

This book is an excellent addition to the commentaries that are available on the book of Job.

Though a relatively small commentary (177 pages) in comparison to the size of the book of Job, the book is one of the most helpful, in that the writer sheds much new light on the book, giving deeper insights into every aspect.

Helped by his knowledge of the original languages, the author deals with the structure, the role of each person in the book of Job, the meaning of their speeches and brings this all together to give an overall outlook and theme.

There is much by way of pastoral insight and application. The chapter on ‘Job’s Triumph’ is a very important one, giving much new insight.

The way the writer organises his arguments and brings them to bear on each subject, having an all encompassing overview of the book of Job, is done in a masterful way.

As one of America’s foremost linguists and an outstanding Old Testament scholar, he opposed the higher critical movement and sought to steady the church when under assault by pointing it tot the trustworthiness of God’s word.

Easy to read – though one may not agree with every conclusion – there is much here that helps us understand all the more the purpose and glory of God, seen in the afflictions of Job.

Review: Same-sex marriage: Is it really the same?

Same sex marriage

Our price: £6, by Mark Christopher (Day One)

This book about same-sex marriage is a comprehensive and very helpful treatment of a topic which is now dominating our society and the media. It is an excellent help to Christians who want to know how to react to same-sex marriage (SSM) and those involved in it, in a Biblical way.

It starts with two excellent chapters which show the divine purpose for marriage and how incompatible this is with same-sex marriage.

It shows the dangers involved with same-sex marriage – how it opens the door to other things being taken further with other definitions of marriage now becoming acceptable; the persecution of Christians; the health risks associated with same-sex marriage.

It asks the question how we arrived at this point and then goes on to look at how the church and Christians should respond. It states clearly and compassionately what he Christian message to those in same-sex marriages should be and makes clear the possibility of change for those who follow Christ and know His power.

There are useful appendices which give good answers to many common questions surrounding same-sex marriage.
