Review: Puritan Evangelism: A Biblical Approach

Puritan Evangelism A Biblical Approachby Joel R. Beeke, Reformed Heritage Books, Our Price: £3.70

This introduction to the subject of Puritan Evangelism helpfully shows us the essential elements as to why and how the Puritans evangelised. Their zeal for evangelism was allied to a thoroughly Biblical approach.

They would offer Christ as Saviour, whilst not dividing this from His claims as Lord. Their use of the law is helpfully outlined, showing how they avoided mere legalism, but also highlights how they saw salvation not as deliverance from sins penalty, but also from its power. An emphasis on divine sovereignty was coupled to that of human responsibility.

Their preaching was plain, allowing the Biblical text to speak and was coupled with a power which came from a dependency of the Holy Spirit and prayer.

This booklet addresses many modern day problems found in evangelistic preaching but is also a great encouragement and help to those who would preach the “unsearchable riches of Christ.”
