Born in Ferrara, Italy, in 1452, Girolamo Savonarola, even as a child, was serious and devout. Whilst others indulged in the pleasures and diversions available to the young men of his day, Girolamo longed for peace with God.

Having entered a monastery, he turned from the writings of Aristotle to read and study the Bible.  Though a Roman Catholic monk to the end of his days, and not a doctrinal Reformer, there is clear evidence that Girolamo Savonarola understood that He could only be saved by grace.

He wrote: “Sinner that I am, where shall I turn now? To the Lord whose mercy is infinite. No one can glory in himself; all the saints say, not of us but of the Lord is glory. They were not saved by their merit, nor by their work, but by the goodness and grace of God that nobody may glory in himself.”

“This is a moving and vivid account, it adds all the more to our understanding of the decadent times and circumstances the Reformers confronted and gives a colourful picture of the courage and zeal of a notable forerunner of the Reformation.”
